Penélope Cruz entered the cinema screen in the early 1990s and soon became a sought-after and appreciated actress in Spain. Her career breakthrough was the 1999 film All About My Mother, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, which was her second film under the direction of this cult auteur. Working with Almdóvar has given Penélope Cruz a number of memorable roles; he has made eight films with his acting muse to date. She received an Oscar nomination for her role in Volver. She won the Academy Award for her supporting role in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona. More recently, Cruz shone in the comedy hit Official Competition, in which she played the lead role of an eccentric director.
